Dauji Mandir

Located about 18 kilometers from Mathura, the Dauji Temple is one of the oldest and most revered temples in the city. Standing tall since 1535 AD, it is dedicated to Lord Balarama, the elder brother of Lord Krishna. The temple attracts devotees and pilgrims from across the country seeking blessings in the divine abode of Lord Baladev. The magnificent idol of Lord Baladev, about 7 feet tall, is adorned with exquisite attire and embellishments. The presence of the Kshir Sagar (Sea of Milk) adds to the temple's allure. Situated on the banks of the Yamuna River, the Dauji Temple is a captivating pilgrimage destination steeped in mythology, culture, history, and spirituality.

The history of Dauji Mandir stretches back to ancient times. The western border of the Magadha Kingdom once lay here, offering protection from the tyranny of Kansa. For this reason, Nanda Baba chose this sacred land in Vindravan forest for the birth of Baladeva. Symbolic representations of his birth are still present in the villages of Reedha (an evolution of Rohineyak Gram) and Averni (meaning "without fear") which exist to this day. The recent construction of the temple is attributed to Seth Shyam Das in 1580 AD. This 5000-year-old legacy holds a remarkable twist - a donation by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb who bestowed five villages and 580 acres of land in the name of Dauji Maharaj. Inscriptions on the structure indicate that Aurangzeb also built the Shahi Nakarkhana here in 1729 AD.

The temple, deeply rooted in Hindu mythology and holding immense cultural significance, showcases a distinctive Indian architectural style. Three entrances provide access to the central hall, with one adorned with a compact pyramidal tower. Inside the main sanctum, intricate artwork adorns the walls, accompanied by the figures of Lord Balarama and his consort, Revati. Baladeva is worshipped as the primary deity, while a life-sized statue of Revati is also present. Within the Dauji Mandir complex, an adjacent courtyard houses a small vaulted chamber believed to be the divine abode after the deity's manifestation. Each courtyard, known as Kunj, bears the name of its founder. The Kshir Sagar, or the Sea of Milk, is a brick-built tank spanning 80 square yards. While its surface is covered in green algae due to deterioration, devotees still partake in ritual bathing within its waters.

The Dauji Temple holds a significant place within the Vallabh Sampradaya of Mathura. Its history is intertwined with the epic tale of Lord Krishna and his elder brother, Lord Balarama. It is believed that Nanda Baba chose the sacred land of Dauji Mandir for Lord Balarama's birthplace. Here, in this divine abode, Lord Balarama descended to bless humanity with his presence. Dauji Mandir is also renowned for its vibrant cultural celebrations, particularly during Holi, where grand festivities like Huranga Holi and Phoolon wali Holi attract visitors worldwide.

Makhan Mishri (sweetened condensed milk with nuts) and Burfi (a dense milk-based fudge) are offered as bhog (sacred food offering) to Dauji Ji, along with flowers.
