Baleshwar Temple

Among the prominent temples in Champawat, Uttarakhand, stands the Baleshwar Temple, a place of immense historical and religious significance. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this captivating temple complex holds a special place in the hearts of locals and pilgrims alike.

The Baleshwar Temple stands as a testament to the architectural prowess of the Chand dynasty rulers. While a specific date of construction remains unknown, historical inscriptions suggest it was built between the 10th and 12th centuries. Local legends weave a fascinating tale around the temple's origin. It is believed that Lord Shiva was worshipped here by Lord Bali during the Mahabharata era, thus earning the name Baleshwar (Baleshwar meaning "Lord of Bali"). Another legend suggests that King Dhyan Chand, in an act of penance, renovated the temple in 1420 CE. Local folklore adds another layer to the temple's charm. According to stories, a cowherd noticed his cow withholding milk. Upon investigation, he discovered a Shivling in the forest. It is said that Lord Shiva himself revealed the presence of the lingam to the cowherd in a dream, leading to the temple's construction.

The Baleshwar Temple's architecture is a sight to behold. Intricate stone carvings adorn the temple complex, primarily constructed using blue and green granite. The outer walls depict captivating images of Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and various deities. The complex encompasses the main temple, along with two other shrines - one dedicated to "Ratneshwar" and another named "Champavati," dedicated to "Mother Durga." Notably, there are around half a dozen Shiva lingams within the temple complex, with the main crystal lingam being especially renowned for its miraculous powers.

The Baleshwar Temple is a part of Uttarakhand's nationally protected heritage sites. Its historical significance and spiritual aura make it a revered destination. Grand celebrations erupt during Mahashivratri and the holy month of Sawan, drawing massive crowds of devotees. Locals usher in their New Year with a visit to the Baleshwar Temple, marked by a grand procession and community feasting on January 1st. A unique phenomenon is said to occur here - the trident placed atop the Gummad (dome) rotates throughout the day in sync with the movement of the sun.

Devotees offer fruits, flowers, sweets, bilva leaves, milk, yoghurt, honey, and other sacred items to Lord Bholenath.
